Frequently Asked Questions

Find Answers To All Your Questions

Are there specific spare wheel carriers for off-road or heavy-duty use?

Yes, all Wheeliams models are specifically designed for off-road or heavy-duty use, they are built to withstand tougher conditions and heavier loads.

They will generally accept all-terrain and mud-terrain tyres too, but if in doubt contact us to check before purchase.

Can a spare wheel carrier be used for other storage needs?

Some carriers come with additional storage options or can be adapted to carry other items like jerry cans, bicycles, or other equipment. Check out some of our additional storage products:

Can I install a spare wheel carrier myself, or do I need professional help?

Wheeliams spare wheel carriers can be installed by someone with basic DIY skills and tools, but for more complex installations, or to ensure safety and proper fitting professional help might be recommended.

You can download product installation instructions from our website before you buy to find out what would be the best method for you.

Can the Renault Master Wheel Carrier be fitted to doors with 270 degree hinges?

The Wheeliams Wheel Carrier for the Renault Master van can only be fitted to 180 degree hinges. If you have a vehicle with 270 degree hinges you can easily obtain 180 degree hinges on-line and change them over before fitting the wheel carrier.

Do spare wheel carriers come with locks or anti-theft features?

The spare wheel is bolted on to the wheel carrier and this in turn is bolted on to the vehicle, this provides good deterrence against casual theft.

Our Locking Wheel Bolt Set bolts have a unique pattern and key that makes them harder to remove without the proper tool. This helps deter potential thieves from stealing your wheels, as they are more difficult to remove quickly and discreetly. In addition, our wheel carriers are deliberately designed with an open structure that allows you to thread a lockable security cable through the wheel and the wheel carrier.

For even more security you could fit a security hasp to the vehicle body and thread a security cable through the wheel, the wheel carrier and the hasp to ensure that all parts of the system are secured. (We don't supply cables or hasps but these are easily available on-line.)

Do the threaded / tapped holes in wheel carriers accept standard wheel studs / bolts?

Yes, the threads in the wheel mounting plates are have an M14x1.5 thread which is standard for wheel studs or bolts. You can buy a Locking Wheel Bolt Set from our store.

Will a wheel carrier still work with a towbar mounted bike rack?

Whether this works will depend very much on your vehicle type, bike size and bike rack type.

One solution that is often used to move the bike rack further away from the wheel carrier is to use a Tow Bar Ball Extension. The extension will move the tow bar ball further back and give more clearance between the bike rack and wheel carrier. These are commonly available on-line.

If you need more advice about this for a specific installation then do get in touch.

Do you sell the wheel bolts or studs needed for Wheel Carriers?

Yes we do! Locking Wheel Bolt Set...

Will a spare wheel carrier affect the handling or fuel efficiency of my motorhome or campervan?

Adding a spare wheel carrier, especially if it is heavy, can affect vehicle handling and fuel efficiency slightly. It's important to distribute weight properly and ensure the carrier is designed to minimize aerodynamic drag.

Do your wheel carriers swing away from the door?

Our wheel carriers are fixed to the door and door hinges.

They move with the door and there is no need for them to move separately, this is a much simpler and more durable arrangement than a separately hinged carrier.

Why do I need a spare wheel carrier for my motorhome or campervan?

A spare wheel carrier provides a convenient and secure way to store a spare tyre.

Using a wheel carrier means that:

  • the spare wheel is easily accessible when needed to replace a damaged tyre
  • doesn't occupy storage space within the vehicle
  • isn't stored underneath he vehicle where it is more vulnerable to contamination and damage from the road surface
  • and ultimately it looks good!

Does the Wheeliams side-mounted boat rack affect the performance of my van?

As with all externally mounted accessories the boat rack will have some impact on fuel consumption and handling.

We can't quantify this as it will vary between individual vehicles. We recommend that you install the rack add the load and then make some test runs to get used to handling before your main journey.

You do also of course need to allow for the increased vehicle width when the rack is loaded and adjust your spatial awareness accordingly.

You may also find that, depending on your individual setup, there is additional wind noise from the rack and load. This is unavoidable as the rack and load disrupt the airflow around the vehicle. To reduce wind noise you may want to experiment with different load positions or adjustments to the rack.

Do you manufacture special products?

We don't generally manufacture one-off products.

The main reason for this is that unique products have a unique - and high - cost, this is especially so for vehicle related products, and this high cost is not often viable for our customers.

If you are happy with this, and particularly if you are after something fairly simple, then get in touch and we can give you a quote.

However, if you can't see what you are looking for in our standard product range and don't want to pay an unusually high cost then send us a message by email to support@wheeliams.co.uk with "Product Idea" in the title and we can add your requirements to our list of future development projects.

Do you supply painted products as well as unpainted?

Some of our products are actually supplied painted: check the product description to see whether the product you want is normally painted or unpainted.

We don't offer a painting service for products that are normally supplied unpainted.

Why isn't my product painted?

We are always mindful that our customers expect a high quality product that matches their vehicle so there a couple of reasons why our larger steel products, such as Wheel Carriers and Ladder aren't supplied painted:

  1. Our experience has been that, if supplied pre-finished, these larger steel products can have the paint finish damaged in shipping.
  2. A standard paint finish may not match your specific finish requirements for your vehicle accessories. Consequently we don't pre-paint these products, leaving the colour and texture of the final finish to you - whether wet-painting or powdercoating.

It's also important to note that we don't recommend a hot-dip galvanised finish for our products as the sealed tubes that are used in most of our products cannot be galvanised without modification.

We can however supply pre-finished product if we install it ourselves at our site in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, UK. The cost of this installation, including product powder coating, is £450+VAT.

Why does my product look rusty?

Many of our product are manufactured from Mild Steel and all are inspected and shipped in good condition without surface rust. Sometimes, owing to shipping and weather conditions some light surface rust can appear on mild steel products. This isn't a problem as your painting contractor should, as a standard procedure, sand-blast your product before painting. This will remove any surface rust or contamination and allow a your contractor to apply a normal paint or powder-coat finish.

How do I get my Wheeliams product painted?

There are a few options:

You can find a local business to powdercoat your product.

You can paint it yourself. For DIY work we recommend using an epoxy primer and a Upol Raptor top coat.

We can get it powder coated for you but you would need to collect from our site in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, UK as we don't ship coated product owing to the risk of in-transit damage.

The cost would be £75+VAT per product. Contact us if you would like to follow up this option and we can send payment information to you. You can contact us on Chat on our website or by email at support@wheeliams.co.uk

How do I ensure my Wheeliams product is securely attached to my vehicle?

Follow the installation instructions carefully and:

CHECK YOUR PRODUCT AFTER FIRST USE:

After your first journey with the product fitted, check all fixings to ensure that all are tight to the torque settings originally applied. Check vehicle fittings and panels around mounting points to ensure that there are no signs of stress or deflection on the vehicle or product.

ONGOING CHECKS OF VEHICLE CONNECTIONS:

Once every month and before & after long or aggressive journeys check all fixings to ensure that all are tight to the torque settings originally applied. Check vehicle fittings and panels around mounting points to ensure that there are no signs of stress or deflection on the vehicle or product.

How do I look after my Wheeliams Product?

All vehicle related products need regular care and maintenance:

PROTECTION:

All painted products benefit from further surface protection. We recommend applying GYEON Q²M WetCoat to your finished Wheeliams product to maximise the life of your finish.

CLEANING:

To further prolong the life of your product, ensure that it regularly cleaned by pressure washing with water and a detergent. Do not apply solvents or corrosive cleaning agents.

CHECK VEHICLE CONNECTIONS:

Once every month and before & after long or aggressive journeys check all fixings to ensure that all are tight to the torque settings originally applied. Check vehicle fittings and panels around mounting points to ensure that there are no signs of stress or deflection on the vehicle.

My Wheeliams product has been damaged in an accident, can you fix it?

We can sometimes repair damaged product but it depends on the product and the extent of the damage. Please send a photograph of the damaged product and we can make an assessment. You can do this on the Chat on our website or by email to: support@wheeliams.co.uk

How can I contact customer service?
