VOLKSWAGEN T3 - Rear Bumper Storage System

VOLKSWAGEN T3 - Rear Bumper Storage System

Pivoting storage that allows full access to the rear of the vehicle

This is an incredibly versatile rear bumper replacement that allows storage boxes and spare wheels to be mounted on the rear bumper and hinges them out of the way to give full access to the rear of the vehicle.

The base kit includes:

  • A fixed main bumper beam that bolts into the existing vehicle chassis rails.
  • Pivoting left and right hand mounting beams with bolt hole patterns that allow flexible attachments of accessories. The beam pivots are fitted with long-life engineering grade pivot bushes for ease of movement.
  • Locking latches for both mounting beams.
  • Two recovery shackle lugs that are positioned to take recovery loads directly back to the main chassis rails.
  • Side bumper extensions that replicate the original wrap-around bumper ends.
  • An interface plate under the centre of the main beam with 4xM10 holes to facilitate the fitting of a hitch or receiver.

Onto this base kit you can add:

An Accessory Mount Module: this comprises one or more modular supports than can be bolted flexibly along both pivoting beams as required to support storage boxes or any other accessory. The supports have connections holes in their upper faces as well as a short end flange with two bolt holes. These connection options give users the most flexibility to attach proprietary accessories or custom made storage.

A Wheel Carrier Module: this also bolts to either pivoting beam and can accept a wheel with 5 bolts on a 112mm diameter.

This kit is manufactured from stainless steel throughout and is supplied unpainted for you to finish as you wish.

Please note that our kit does not include any storage boxes, recovery shackles or wheels!

If you need a different accessory mount to fit some other kit to the bumper then let us know and we will see if we can add it to our standard range!

Construction

This product very robust and is manufactured throughout from stainless steel. The main beams are 5mm thick, the recovery shackle lugs are 2x10mm thick and other non-structural components are 3mm thick.

The pivoting beams, when fully loaded, move easily with one hand and the pivot bearings require no lubrication or maintenance, other than the usual routine checks to make sure fasteners are tight.

When latched, the pivoting beams locate on ABS pads that can be adjusted to ensure that the beams are rigidly located and cannot move in transit.

Made in Yorkshire

This product is designed and manufactured in Yorkshire and uses Yorkshire grit and ingenuity to bring you a high quality product with really practical features.

Fitting Instructions

Installation

It is important that you test fit and assemble this kit BEFORE painting or powder coating to ensure that everything fits correctly. We cannot accept product returns that have been painted first then found to not fit your vehicle.

Installation is straightforward and has the following key steps:

  1. Remove the existing rear bumper.
  2. Fit the main bumper beam by inserting the support rails into the main vehicle chassis rails (where the bumper mounts were fitted previously) and bolt in place.
  3. If the pivoting beams have not been fitted to the main beam, fit these by inserting the pivot pins into the main beam pivots and fit the clamp washer underneath to hold in place. Ensure that two 'top-hat' plastic bearings are used, one at the top and bottom of each pivot.
  4. Fit the locking latches.
  5. Fit and adjust the plastic beam packers behind the latches to ensure that the pivoting beams lock firmly in position without any lateral or vertical movement and that the latches hold the beam securely in place.
  6. Fit any Accessory or Wheel Carrier modules that you have purchased.
  7. Check that the beams pivot freely and that no components clash with the vehicle.
  8. Once you are satisfied that the unpainted kit fits and works correctly, remove it and fully dismantle for painting or powder-coating. IMPORTANT NOTE: Carefully remove the plastic bearing from both pivots before coating and ensure that when applying the coating that the pivot pins are masked from paint and that the inside bore of the pivots on the main beam are also masked.
  9. When coating is complete, reassemble the kit.
